Bush Park Orienteering Course
bearings corrected 04-22-2002
Introduction
My name is J.D. Culler, from troop 1288, and for my recent eagle project I designed and installed an orienteering course in Bush Park just over a mile in length.
The course fulfills the requirement for first-class. It is at the Southeast corner of the intersection of Westheimer and South Barker Cypress. (go to www.mapquest.com for directions)
It's 10 numbered cement markers in a field. (1-10)(ground-level) There are also another 2 markers parallel to the north edge of the parking lot.(0 & 50) These are 50 yards apart, so you can measure your step. The first marker is North of the northern edge of the parking lot.
Attached are the directions for the course in GPS form and compass form. Scouts need to use a compass for first-class, but if you own a GPS, you can practice using it there as well. The course takes participants through low-lying areas so you may get your feet wet. When doing this in the summer, I recommend carrying plenty of water with you on the course. It takes approx. an hour to complete.
Course Instructions
To measure your step, use the 50 yd. markers #0 and #50,
parallel to the parking lot.
Angle of declination is 6o E of true N
